Using Role Playing to Reinforce Civics Content in ESL Classrooms
In this session, we will discuss how to cover complex civics, social studies, and history topics in ELA classes by using role-playing activities. These activities utilize both integrated and contextualized learning and project-based learning. The lessons exercise skills such as communication, critical thinking, respecting differences, adaptability, self-awareness, intrapersonal skills, and processing information.
This presentation will offer information about 1) why such activities are needed, 2) how the activities can best be implemented and the challenges, and 3) specific, effective teaching tools and lesson ideas. These activities are great for both new and experienced teachers, as they are simple to set up but always yield surprising and interesting results from the students. The session will include a PowerPoint presentation and handouts. The facilitator will also lead a few group activities to demonstrate how the activities work. There will also be time for discussion and questions.
