Science for All: Project Based Learning in the ESL classroom
The presentation will outline hands-on activities that can be used with English language learners in a variety of classroom levels and types. The presentation will cover both the pedagogical reasons for bringing these types of activities into ELA classrooms and provide concrete ways they can be implemented. The introduction will include a research basis about the benefits of incorporating science experiments into ELA classrooms, such as (but not limited to) in order to: utilize total physical response methods to appeal to kinesthetic learners, introducing new and unusual vocabulary, practicing following written and/or spoken instructions, reinforce communicating in a team, incorporate math into ELA curriculum in a contextualized way, integrate prior knowledge and expertise of the adult students, increase academic fluency, create memorable and engaging lessons for the students and to keep lesson plans engaging for the teacher as well.
