This presentation will offer insight into Content-Based Instruction for adult English Language Learners. I will discuss why such classes are needed, how they can best be implemented, and what the challenges are. I will also demonstrate some effective teaching tools and lesson ideas for the classroom. Instructors are often frustrated when the ELLs in their classrooms reach a place where they continue to make the same grammatical mistakes and stop acquiring new skills, but they are not yet fluent in the language. The solution, in this case, could be CBI - an approach in second language education that is designed to facilitate language acquisition through content areas, such as mathematics, social studies, and science. The current research demonstrates that CBI is the best avenue for ELLs looking to bridge the gap between form-focused English classes and either attending an English-speaking university or finding a job that requires some English fluency. The research shows that implications for incorporating CBI into language classrooms include short-term benefits, such as increasing students’ interest, motivation, and retention, and long-term benefits, such as increased academic fluency.
