Gender Equity in ESL Classrooms

from $200.00

We know that women have the unique power to lift communities out of poverty, and the research will be presented at the top of the session. Additionally, there are many ways to address gender equity in adult education ELA classrooms, through a trauma-informed lens, and address issues of income inequality, unemployment, health problems, and violence - as well as strength, momentum, and innovation. This session will discuss specific ways to introduce these topics to students, and then productive ways to move forward. The goals are to reduce the barriers (child care, health, domestic violence, unemployment, etc.) experienced by immigrant women in adult education programs, assist them in mapping and achieving their goals, and empower them to fight for social and policy changes themselves. This session is designed for new or experienced teachers working with adult immigrants.

This presentation will provide background data that supports the need for women's empowerment in ELA classrooms and specific lesson plans and activity ideas to utilize in the classroom. The presentation will include a PowerPoint presentation and handouts with both background data which supports the need for women's empowerment in ELA classrooms and specific lesson plans and activity ideas to utilize in the classroom. We will also lead a few group activities to demonstrate how the activities work. There will also be time for discussion and questions.
